Students learn about the history and organization of science and technology policy in the United States including the role of the White House, Congress, and federal agencies; the concept of public policy analysis including identifying a policy question, policy options, analytical criteria, and developing a recommendation for policymakers based on their analysis. They also learn how to communicate their results to policymakers and the public. This is a Level One class.

Science & Technology Policy History and Organization: Overview of the history and organization of science and technology policy in the United States including the role of the White House, Congress, and federal agencies.

Overview of public policy analysis: Students work together on a pre-determined policy issue within their community or broad topical interest (e.g, energy, environment, health). They identify a policy question of interest; three policy options; analyze their options based on four criteria: effectiveness, efficiency, equity and ease of political acceptability; and develop a recommendation for a policymaker based on that analysis.
