Earners of the NCTRC certification, CTRS® Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist®, have met NCTRC’s Certification Standards related to academic coursework, have the knowledge, skills, and abilities recognized as being essential for the practice of recreational therapy, and have passed the NCTRC exam. CTRS credential will be valid for the next five-year recertification cycle subject to NCTRC Certification Standards.

Complete and pass the NCTRC Exam.
Submitted all application fees.
Completion of an internship experience or professional work experience that uses the Therapeutic Recreation process in accordance with NCTRC Standards.
Completion of Bachelor degree or higher.

The NCTRC Certification Standards serve as the governing policies and procedures for all certification services and credentialing processes.

NCCA Standards for Certification Programs

The NCCA's Standards for Accreditation for Certification Programs, which were created in the mid-1970s, were the first standards developed by the credentialing industry for professional certification programs.
