Earning Criteria

Standards

Requirements to earn CGFM:

Current candidates must have a bachelor's degree from an accredited U.S college or university, pass three CGFM examinations and complete two years of professional-level experience in U.S. government financial management.

Requirements for active CGFM status:

CGFMs must renew their designation annually and complete 80 CPE hours every two years in government financial management topics (including 4 hours in ethics).

Financial Accountants

Analyze financial information and prepare financial reports for internal information. May also perform management duties and actively contribute to financial, operation, and strategic plans. May also summarize financial statements for external parties such as stakeholders, governments agencies, and potential investors.

Financial Managers, Department

Direct and coordinate financial activities of workers in a department. Duties may include reviewing financial reports, monitoring accounts, and preparing financial forecasts. May also investigate ways to improve profitability and analyse markets for business opportunities.

Accounting Managers

Manage accounting staff and the accounting activities within the appropriate time frame and budget. Responsible for all accounting activities relating to financial reporting. Develop and maintain accounting principles and procedures to ensure timely and accurate financial statements issued.

Budget and Planning Managers

Design and implement effective budgeting policies and procedures, analyze financial information, and forecast future budget needs. Ensure that all operations are within budget, and review budget requests.
