Future Foundry Processional Lantern Sculptor
Issued by
Badge Nation
Earners of this badge have undertaken training with Future Foundry to design and fabricate an illuminated 3D lantern sculpture for a public procession or event. As part of the training programme, the earner has implemented the skills learned to create their own sculptural lantern which was successfully carried in a public lantern procession or light event. Earning Criteria
-
Earner took part in an introductory lantern sculpture workshop with Future Foundry, gaining skills such as how to work with withy (willow), construction techniques, using wet strength tissue and explored a range of decorative techniques. They also learned health and safety guidelines around materials use, building large structure, supporting the lantern wearer or carrier during the procession and basic event management skills.
-
Earner undertook research into lantern design and the theme of the event to create a strong design for the lantern.
-
Earner fabricated a strong internal armature or external framework using bamboo and other appropriate materials.
-
Earner sculpted a framework around the armature using willow canes (withy), centre cane, wire and other appropriate materials. This willow framework needed to 1. Create a strong 3D design of the lantern in line with their design 2. Successfully support the outer layer of tissue and 3. Ensure the sculpture was balanced and able to be carried or worn in the procession.
-
Earner installed lighting festoons (or instructed an electrician on installation) in a way that would provide illumination to all parts of the lantern.
-
Earner applied a tissue paper and glue skin to the sculpture. When dry, earner tested the sculpture in outdoor conditions and amended the construction where needed.
-
Earner decorated the lantern using paint, varnish or colourful or reflective material.
