Indigenous rangers increase their mapping skills to create detailed maps and responsibly share information using collected spatial data to monitor country and significant species on country. Training is delivered on the job through collaborative research projects or monitoring programs under Elder authorisation, so rangers can use TouchGIS as a tool to support their caring for country work. Supported by the Healthy Country training program and delivered collaboratively by CDU, CSIRO and NAILSMA.

Earning Criteria

Activity 1 includes collaborating with Traditional Owners to: ensure the right people are present to decide what data from Country can or cannot be mapped; and discuss and agree on rules for creating and using maps to make decisions about Country; and understand cultural and consent protocols about sharing information.

Activity 2 includes setting up the map to use away from the station by 1) creating a new cache region; and 2) downloading map data to view offline.

Activity 3 includes importing other layers of interest in the map. This will include importing a shapefile into the map.

Activity 4 includes understanding different types of feature classes. It includes adding a feature class for what can be mapped in a culturally appropriate way.
