Indigenous rangers will learn to create maps and responsibly share information using collected spatial data from various sources to monitor country and significant species on country. Training will be delivered on the job through collaborative research projects or monitoring programs under Elder authorisation, so rangers can use TouchGIS as a tool to support their caring for country work.

Earning Criteria

Activity 1 includes collaborating with Traditional Owners to: ensure the right people are present to decide what data from Country can or cannot be mapped; and discuss and agree on rules for creating and using maps to make decisions about Country; and understand cultural and consent protocols about sharing information.

Activity 2 includes opening or creating a project in TouchGIS and becoming familiar with the map window including how to turn the GPS on and off and change the information shown on map.

Activity 3 includes learning how to move around the map. This includes choosing what base map to display; and zooming in and out, and moving around the map window.

Activities 4-6 include adding features to the map. This includes 1) adding a point, a line and a polygon to a map to mark an area of interest; 2) labelling the feature 3) changing the colour of the feature; and 4) adding a description to practically demonstrate responsible and confident use of the mapping software.

Activity 7 covers responsible sharing of collected data. This includes: 1) getting consent to share the data; and 2) exporting the data in different formats.
