Hearing Country using Acoustic Recorders (Introductory)

Indigenous rangers will learn to use acoustic recorders to responsibly collect useful and useable data to monitor significant species on country. Training will be delivered on the job through collaborative research projects or monitoring programs under Elder authorisation, so rangers can use acoustic recorders as a tool to support their caring for country work.

Earning Criteria

Activity 1: Understanding cultural protocols for setting up acoustic recorders. Includes collaborating with Traditional Owners to: ensure the right people are present and have provided authorisation for acoustic recorders to be used on their country; and discuss and agree on rules for acoustic recorder use in the area to be surveyed.

Activity 2: Check equipment is ready. Includes checking the batteries are charged and the SD cards are formatted.

Activity 3: Set up schedule for recording and download onto SD card. Includes using the Scheduler program to set the times the recording will start and finish. It also covers saving the file and downloading it to a SD card.

Activity 4: Understand the different parts of the recorder. Includes being able to point out the SD card slots, the batteries, the power button, and the screen.

Activity 5: Insert SD cards and batteries into recorder. Includes inserting charged batteries into recorder ensuring +ve end of battery aligns with +ve sign for each battery compartment and being able to power the recorder on and off. It also includes inserting the formatted SD cards into the SD slots.

Activity 6: Enter the time zone. Includes using the up/down arrows to add the time zone for where you will place the recorder (i.e. Northern Territory time is 9.5 hours ahead of the original UTC time zone shown).

Activity 7: Connect the microphone. Includes connecting the microphone to the left or bottom of the recorder, depending on where you think the best position to hear the target species.

Activity 8: Attach recorder to tree or post. Covers using the strap to tie to the recorder to the tree 1.5 m from the ground. If no tree is available use a post clamp to attach to star picket.

Activity 9: Turn on recorder. Covers pressing the power button to turn on if it is not on already.
