Realist Interviewing

This micro-credential introduces the key elements of realist interviewing. It explains how a realist understanding of causation shapes realist interviewing, and the ways in which realist interviews differ from other forms of interviewing. It describes how to ethically design, conduct, document, analyse and store data from realist interviews, including considerations for particular population groups, and develops key skills in realist interviewing.

A two day face-to-face workshop provides lectures, introduction to the skills involved, and practice in applying skills.

The assessment requires the completion of three tasks: Design, document and justify an interview sample in relation to a particular program theory and develop an interview guide; Conduct and record an interview using the interview guide; Write a brief critical reflection on the interview including changes that may be required for future interviews.
Standards
A rubric for assessment has been developed based on CDU standards for grading of assignments and is provided to all students.
International reporting standards for realist evaluation will be used as tools for self-assessment of work and as a tool for feedback from staff.
