Lean 6 Sigma Black Belt

The Lean 6 Sigma Black Belt certification is issued to employees within the City of Commerce City, Colorado, who complete an intensive, four-day course on the fundamentals, applications, and review of Lean 6 Sigma process improvements. To earn certification, students must attend the class as well as lead a process improvement project through planning, research, piloting, and implementation. Black Belts must have already earned a Green Belt through the CFI (or similar organization).

Earning Criteria

Students must attend, participate in, and complete a four day training with certified trainers from the Center for Innovation, an internal process improvement consulting firm for the City of Commerce City, Colorado. Students are expected to participate in large-group mapping exercises, breakout group discussions and worksheets, and critically engage with process improvement in their work.

Students must complete their Black Belt project within twelve months of completing the training. Black Belt Projects are process improvements within the scope of control or recommendation of the innovator. Students must create complete an A3 form, identify cost savings, pilot the new process, and implement a successful solution (if applicable). Students complete this project under the supervision of a certified Black Belt within the Center for Innovation.

Students are expected to take the concepts, themes, and tools from the Black Belt and act as a staff leader for continuous improvement projects and initiatives. Students are expected to advocate for cross-city collaboration, deliberate problem-solving, and process improvement within their work. Black Belts are the lynchpins of the City's Culture of Continuous Improvement.
