Lean 6 Sigma Green Belt

The Lean 6 Sigma Green Belt certification is issued to employees within the City of Commerce City, Colorado, who complete a one-day, four-hour course on the fundamentals of Lean 6 Sigma process improvement. To earn certification, students must also complete a project wherein they apply the principles of L6S to their work processes. Green Belts certified by the Center for Innovation will understand and apply L6S tools, including process mapping, 8 wastes, added value, A3 improvement, and DMAIC.

Earning Criteria

Students must attend, participate in, and complete a four-hour training with certified trainers from the Center for Innovation, an internal process improvement consulting firm for the City of Commerce City, Colorado. Students are expected to participate in large-group mapping exercises, breakout group discussions and worksheets, and critically engage with process improvement in their work.

Students must complete their Green Belt project within six months of completing the training. Green Belt Projects are process improvements within the employee's immediate work unit. Students must create a change narrative, current and future state cost and values estimates, process maps, waste maps, and at least one gap analysis tool. Students complete this project under the supervision of a certified Black Belt within the Center for Innovation.

Students are expected to take the concepts, themes, and tools from the Green Belt training and apply to their day-to-day work team. Students are expected to advocate for cross-city collaboration, deliberate problem-solving, and process improvement within their work. Green Belts are the foundation of the City's Culture of Continuous Improvement.
