Earning Criteria

To apply for the certification exam a candidate must create and account with the Competency and Credentialing Institute which administers the certification. To complete the online application, the following information is required: • Personal contact information • RN license information • Employer contact information • Supervisor contact information Further detail on the data needed for the application may be found on the CCI website. All fees must be paid in full prior to testing.

A current, unrestricted RN license in the state or country where current practice occurs.

Currently working full- or part-time in perioperative nursing, including nursing education, administration, research or clinical practice.

A minimum of 2 years and 2,400 hours of experience as a perioperative registered nurse (RN). A minimum of 50% (1,200 hours) of those hours must be in the intraoperative setting.

To earn the CNOR credential applicants must pass the certification examination covering the knowledge required to practice as a perioperative nurse. All examination questions have the same format; multiple choice questions, four possible answers with only correct answer. A score of 620 of 800 possible points is required for passing. The CNOR certification examination is developed in accordance with psychometric best practices and principles of the certification industry.
Standards
ABSNC is the only accrediting body specifically for nursing-related certification programs. Nursing certification organizations may attain accreditation by demonstrating compliance with the 18 standards established by the ABSNC.
The NCCA will be an administratively independent resource recognized as the authority on accreditation standards for professional certification programs The NCCA helps to ensure the health, welfare, and safety of the public through the accreditation of a variety of individual certification programs that assess professional competency.
