The role of the professional perioperative nurse educator in nursing professional development involves promoting the generation and dissemination of new knowledge and the use of evidence to advance NPD practice, guide perioperative clinical practice, and improve care of perioperative patients. This component of PEP-COM supports the individual in fulfilling their role as a champion of scientific inquiry and a mentor to other perioperative professionals in the implementation of EBP practices.

The Association for Nursing Professional Development performed a role delineation study for the specialty of nursing professional development. The results of that study are the basis for the NPD-BC certification. The importance of the role delineation study is demonstrated in all activities of the NPD practitioner.
