The course objective is to teach students how to measure height, weight and vision, and to take blood pressure and vital signs and chart the results accurately. Students are also taught to perform laboratory tests such as hemoglobin, HCT (Hematocrit), blood glucose, and routine urinalysis. Venipuncture is practiced using prostheses. Students are trained in OSHA (Occupational Safety & Health Administration) blood borne regulations.

Earning Criteria

The methods of instruction include laboratory, practical exercises, lecture, discussion, and classroom exercises. The general course topics include infection control, vital signs, medical history, OSHA regulations, phlebotomy, urology, otorhinolaryngology, ophthalmology, and throat cultures. The methods of evaluation are quizzes, examinations, performance rubrics (checklists), class participation, and attendance with a minimum passing score of 60 percent.
