Empathy in the 21st century includes the capacity to understand others' perspectives and feelings to improve the quality of relationships, behaviors and performance. Empathetic individuals exhibit core four sub-competencies: "read the room": they listen actively, to what is said explicitly and nonverbally. They are able to recognize what others need and to validate the feelings and of colleagues, recognizing that validation is not the same as agreement, and to incorporate diverse perspectives.
