A person with digital literacy skill can identify common computer parts and their purpose, effectively utilizes basic workplace computer applications, and understands how to use the internet effectively and safely.

Earning Criteria

Earners will complete an initial assessment to test their knowledge of computer basics (common computer parts and different components), email, Google applications, the Microsoft Suite, and internet search basics and safety. Earners who pass this initial assessment with a score of 80% or higher earn the Digital Literacy badge and are not required to complete further assessments.

Earners will complete a Computer Basics eModule to gain a basic understanding of common computer parts. Earners will be able to identify hardware such as the screen, keyboard, mouse/touchpad, and printer. They can differentiate hardware from software that is installed on a computer, such as Google Chrome, Windows, and Adobe Reader. Earners can identify computer parts including the webcam, microphone, power button, and USB, Ethernet, display, charging, and headphone/microphone ports.

Earners will complete an All About Email eModule in which they will learn how to set up a Gmail account, select a professional username and strong password, write and and send a professional email, and compose good e-mail. Earners additionally learn about email features such as reply, reply all, forward, CC, BCC, and viewing and attaching files. Earners will also learn about spam and phishing, how to avoid it, how to block a sender, and how to unsubscribe from unwanted email lists.

Earners will complete a Google Applications eModule in which they will learn about the Google Suite, how to navigate it, how to sort contents into folders, and discover key features of Google Drive, Docs, Sheets, and Slides. Earners will be able to create folders and subfolders in Drive; save files to and download files from Drive; create files in Docs, Sheets and Slides and navigate toolbars within each application.

Earners will complete a Navigating Microsoft Tools eModule to learn about the Word, Excel, and PowerPoint applications in the Microsoft Suite and how to use basic features within each application. Earners will learn how to cut, copy, and paste features, along with their associated shortcut keys. Earners will be able to create, edit, and save Word documents, including saving documents as PDFs; create a spreadsheet in Excel; and create a presentation in PowerPoint.

Earners will complete the What's My Online Footprint? eModule to learn about Internet search basics, gain online safety tips, learn internet etiquette, discover their online footprint and how to manage it, and learn basic online job search tips.

Knowledge checks are built into each eModule to confirm earners' understanding of the concepts covered in each module.

Earners may complete an accompanying workbook in which they will apply what they have learned in each module.
