Music composition comprises many aspects and comes in many forms, styles and genres. Yet, no matter what form it may be in, it is ultimately about organizing sound. This microcredential aims to guide students through a variety of approaches to notated composition with score-based software. Students will be encouraged to compose for small ‘live’ chamber ensembles.

Earning Criteria

• This course will provide exposure to a wide variety of approaches to Composition. Key focus areas include: • NOTATION - conventions, literacy and clarity; SCORE PRODUCTION - extractions, management; COUNTERPOINT & HARMONY – Contrapuntal fundamentals, 7th & 9th chord vocabulary; ORCHESTRATION & ARRANGEMENT - Transposing instruments and Instrument family groupings.

• The development of skills demonstrated through works of composition in weekly classes is a key aspect of the course. Students will be required to write and submit score-based pieces demonstrating the application techniques developed through the program. Frameworks for composition tasks will be set in discussion the teacher.

• Students completing this program will gain professional experience through having their works performed in a formal setting. It is an expectation that at least one work will be given a ‘live’ chamber group performance or theatre performance.
