Stage Production Technician - Stage | Light | Sound

This course, created by industry professionals SLV Productions, is designed to equip learners with fundamental skills to manage technical aspects of stage productions in the areas of stage management, audio production and lighting. The course will be delivered live by SLV Productions, supported by Performing Arts teachers, and will include theory, practical demonstrations and experience and assessment.

LIGHTING 1 Introduction: This course provides learners with an overview of lighting theory including: fixtures, lens angles, accessories and health and safety. The practical component will be delivered separately and learners will have the opportunity to experiment with fixtures and to learn how to create different intensities and effects. Practical aspects of health and safety are explored here.

LIGHTING 2 & 3: Design Process & Lighting Desk: Learners are taught about communication with the production Director, managing budgets, rehearsals, creating synopsis and lighting plots, technical rehearsals, dress rehearsals and health and safety considerations. The practical component of the learning includes operating the lighting desk, operating a plotted show, using a followspot and lighting control principles.

Each learner will plot 8 cues for a song from a musical.

STAGE MANAGEMENT 1 & 2: Learners are introduced to the role of the stage manager in professional theatre and what the role entails for school productions. Key areas of focus are: script marking, calling cues, professional prompt scripts, stage managers desk set up, backstage pager, monitoring a show from full view and stage marking. Health and Safety considerations are reviewed from stage management perspective.

Learners mark a script and practice calling cues. Learners use a professional prompt script to practice calling 30 cues for one song from a musical.

AUDIO 1& 2: Introduction to QLab. These sessions are focussed on using QLab and to operate a sound desk. Key areas of focus are importing audio, fade in/out, sound levels, file management, sound desk set up and operation and signal flow, microphone technology (including placement and map reading), marking the script and tuning speakers.

Demonstrating sound desk operation and using FX such as reverb and delay.

Learners are required to participate in practical skills demonstrations as described above. Knowledge will be assessed with tests on aspects of lighting, stage management and sound production with the assessor evaluating skills and tests.
