Understanding How I Learn

This short course will empower students to understand how they learn best, with the ability to share this information with their teachers. Students will learn about how factors such as sleep, nutrition, environment, and mental health can affect their learning, culminating in a final submission where they identify factors that are conducive to effective learning for them across their subjects.

Earning Criteria

COURSE 1: This session focuses on what it means to learn and how people learn. At the end of this session, students should understand what it means to 'learn effectively'. Throughout the session, students will undertake individual and group tasks focused on the content to support their understanding of the content, and to give them a chance to identify which tasks and techniques work best for them.

ASSESSMENT 1: At the conclusion of session 1, students will complete an online quiz with multiple choice and short answer questions about the content covered. Students are expected to show a reasonable understanding and retention of the ideas and skills covered throughout the course. They must pass this quiz to continue to the next session.

COURSE 2: This session looks at how the environment students are working in and various mental factors can impact their learning (both positively and negatively). Throughout the session, students will undertake individual and group tasks focused on the content to support their understanding of the content, and to give them a chance to identify which tasks and techniques work best for them.

COURSE 3: This session focuses on how students can get the most out of their independent studies, such as self-directed tasks, homework and revision. At the end of this session, students should understand: what time management is and why it's important, what strategies can encourage good time management skills, how to take notes and how to use them, and how technology can help and hinder our learning.

Students are expected to show a reasonable understanding and retention of the ideas and skills covered throughout the course. They must pass this quiz to continue to the final questionnaire.

COURSE: Students will complete a concluding questionnaire about their own learning needs and preferences. This quiz encourages students to reflect on how they learn, and consider if there are ways in which they could improve their study habits/area outside of the classroom in order to best support their own learning and improvement.
