Earners can legally and effectively prescribe medicine in midwifery practice with the skills gained after their application for midwifery prescribing endorsement is approved with Ahpra / Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia. Earners understand pharmacology and the rational use of medicines and investigations, as they apply to pregnancy, birth, postpartum and neonatal care. Earners can design a medication plan, and communicate it appropriately to a woman and her relevant health care team.

Earning Criteria

Earners have analysed and critically reflected on the legislative and regulatory frameworks that govern midwives practice and prescribing in Australia.

Earners have Initiated, and critically evaluated the results of the clinical history, comprehensive physical examination and relevant screening and diagnostic investigations to generate a midwifery care plan, including a medication plan.

Earners have critically evaluated, interpreted and applied information about relevant medications, screening and diagnostic investigations.

Earners have critically discussed the principles of pharmacology, and the rational use of appropriate clinical investigations particularly as they apply to pregnancy, birth, postpartum and neonatal care.

Earners have Synthesised complex information to design a medication plan for, and communicate it appropriately to, a woman and her relevant health care team.

Earners have analysed and critically reflected on the outcome of clinical investigations and the medication plan, synthesising information to modify the plan as needed.

Earners can write legal prescriptions for medications and demonstrate practices that minimise medication risks.
