Animal Behavior in Animal-Assisted Therapies
Issued by
Husson University
Earners of this badge have demonstrated foundational proficiencies in assessing animal behavior and welfare in animal-human interactions as they apply to animal-assisted interventions (AAI). Specifically, earners assess behaviors in AAI to maximize safety between clients and animals in professional settings. Additionally, they have developed a researched-based, species-specific evaluation of the historical relevance of companion animals to human beings.

Skills
Earning Criteria
-
Developed a research-based ethogram for a species with which they will be working that includes objective descriptions of behaviors and categories of behaviors relevant to animal welfare and animal-human interactions. This allows them to identify benefits animals have on humans and their mental health, explain the evolutionary history between companion animals and humans, and demonstrate how, why and when an animal’s behavior and adaptation can be used within the therapy context.
-
Create action plans for welfare based on accurate evaluations of animal social, calming, and stress behaviors.
