The earner completed a multi-month program designed off a mini-MBA curriculum, including 3 workshops and in-territory challenges that cover the fundamentals of business and strategy. The challenges reinforce the concepts learned in the workshops to bring it back into the IBM and HR context. Set up as a cohort learning experience, earners have gained visibility to a new peer network of other high potential HR leaders and a set of executives to form a community of interest for ongoing learning.

Earning Criteria

Must be an employee of IBM. Must be a Band 9 or 10 HR professional with upward potential. (Nomination by senior HR Leader with approval of HRMB member. If you'd like to participate, please discuss the nomination with your manager.)

Completion of the Business Acumen for HR program, which consists of a multi-month journey including 2 three-day face to face workshops and in-territory challenges which will average 2 to 5 hours per week.

Workshops are instructor-led (face to face and virtual) and cover the following themes: Business Landscape and Financial Thinking, Measuring Value Add & Pulling It Together, Financial Results and Debrief. All workshops include a pre and post questionnaire assessing knowledge and understanding.

In-territory Challenges include testing and stand and deliver presentations related to the following topics: Business Acumen Core Content, The IBM Business Models, Fall Plan & Engaging Finance, Merger and Acquisition, Negotiation, Current business challenges & investor relations, and Opportunity Identification for Investment cases. The challenges are designed and led by an instructor or an HR leader with sponsorship by relevant executive stakeholders.

Participants are evaluated by HR VPs & CFOs against a rubric. To earn the badge, they must complete course requirements and a minimum of 90% of the challenges successfully.
