Utilizing scientific techniques, earners can identify economically significant minerals, common igneous/metamorphic/sedimentary rocks that host mineral deposits, solve problems and communicate information. Earners can explain the relationships between igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary rock formations, mineral deposits, geological structures, hydrothermal fluid-flow in the crust and plate tectonics and apply physical chemistry to illustrate mineral formation.

Earning Criteria

Earners must demonstrate mastery of the concepts by completing GEOL 502 and GEOL 503 (Mineralogy and Petrology) with a minimum grade of 70% or "C." and a minimum grade of 80% or “B” for Economic Geology (GEOL 702).

This microcredential consists of three courses critical to the preparation of geoscientists interested in Mineral Resources and Economic Geology: (1) Mineralogy (GEOL 502); (2) Petrology (GEOL 503); and (3) Economic Geology (GEOL 702).
