Earning Criteria

Earners of the Advanced Outside Plant Technician badge have completed an intermediate level theory and refresher course that builds upon the fundamentals and skills learned in the pre-requisite foundational level course such as Fiber Optics 1-2-3 or FTTx for Installers and technicians. Areas covered include safety, terminology, trends in fiber optics, FTTx fundamentals, emergency restoration, and an introduction to fiber characterization.
Hands-on Station - Cable Preparation Earners of the Advanced Outside Plant Technician badge badge have demonstrated preparation competency on mid-entry cable of OSP loose tube cables, stranded cables, and their respective closures.
Hands-on Station Splicing Earners of the Advanced Outside Plant badge have demonstrated understanding and hands-on competency of single fiber mechanical and fusion splicing, ribbon splicing, splice on terminations, and connector testing and inspection.
Hands-on Station Loss Testing Earners of the Advanced Outside Plant badge have demonstrated competency in building LAN panels, span testing including channel and permanent link, and measuring insertion loss, reflectance, and return loss testing.
Hands-on Station OTDR Earners of the Advanced Outside Plant badge have demonstrated understanding of OTDR setup, interpreting OTDR traces and results, troubleshooting spans, and restoration practices.
