Undergraduate Research Methods: SCURCA

Participants are Merrimack College undergraduate students who engaged in summer research funded by the Sakowich Center for Undergraduate Research and Creative Activities (SCURCA) program. Earners participated in weekly activities related to their respective projects and attended four academic sessions designed to build community and educate students about the research process. Participants gained knowledge about the IRB, library databases, resume building, writing, and research results.

Earners completed a 1-hour Institutional Review Board (IRB) academic session. Earners gained an understanding of the IRB and its background. They learned about studies that violated IRB guidelines. They viewed IRB principles and how to apply those principles to their research, and they participated in three case studies.

Earners completed a 1-hour library database research workshop. In this session, students overviewed the following: (1) McQuade Website, (2) LibGuide, (3) MackSearch, (4) Google Scholar, (5) Citation Management, (6) Searching Journals, (7) Streaming Media, and (8) Interloan Library.

Earners completed a 1-hour workshop on ways to incorporate research projects on a resume. The presenter addressed the following resume-related topics: (1) Summaries, (2) Keywords for strong examples, (3) Research and projects, (4) Skills, and (5) Adding SCURCA to your resume.

Earners completed a 1-hour training on how to write research results. In this academic session, earners learned general guidelines for writing up research results by Merrimack professors across various disciplines, and reflected on how they could apply what they learned to write their own SCURCA results.
