Summer Academy - Coastal Ecology Field Experience

This badge will demonstrate an understanding of Long Island surrounding waters. We’re not only surrounded by water, we are also dependent on its ecological health. This track will delve into the exciting world of coastal science: understanding water quality, geomorphology, natural resources management of shellfish to finfish, meteorology, and the particulars of inventory and monitoring of various forms sea life. Students will explore careers in environmental science and/or marine biology.

Participants collected daily water samples, Phytoplankton/grab sampling and Meteorological data.

Participants were trained on trend analysis and long-term data analysis.

Participants explored how to successfully care for aquatic systems within the labs. This will involve students learning how to test the water parameters amongst the tanks to determine what needs to be adjusted for the well-being of the living animals (invertebrates).

Participants participated in feeding our Horseshoe Crabs and learn about basic Horseshoe Crab anatomy and conduct Aquaculture Tank Testing.
