Earners of the 'Foundations of Design Thinking' short course have attained competency in the Design Thinking process, enabling them to apply the process to finding appropriate, user-focused, responses to complex issues and challenges. They are competent in applying the Design Thinking strategies of discovery, define, design and demonstrate to interrogate an issue, identify end-user needs, explore idea generation and create prototype responses.

Earning Criteria

Complete the application of the design thinking process to defining a complex problem. This task requires identifying a complex issue to interrogate, pitching their potential project to other participants in the course, and forming a team to work on the issue.

Build an end-user profile using the empathy mapping, journey mapping and stakeholder mapping templates. Completion of this activity requires qualitative and quantitative research, collaboration, critical thinking and skills of discernment.

Generate multiple potential responses to the challenge, organising these responses thematically, and then extracting from these diverse responses the most desirable, sustainable, feasible and viable solution.

Create a prototype and test responses using storyboarding tools and seeking constructive feedback from peers and the course facilitator.
