Earners of the Family Caregiver- Mealtime and Medication Assistance Workshop have learnt techniques focusing on safe medication assistance, and managing mealtime for a person with dementia, and dysphagia (choking), which includes tips for food consistency. The goal is to maintain a family connection. Badge earners have also learnt effective communication, tools to assist, understand modifications for the recipient's’ abilities and observe health status to notify health care personnel of changes.

Earning Criteria

Complete a 1 hour theory lecture.

Participate a 1.5 hour virtual reality and simulation experience. In simulation, the badge earner practiced providing care and decision-making skills through a real-life situational experience related to the workshop topic.
Standards
Curriculum from the Family Caregiver workshops follow the standards of the accredited HCA program at NorQuest College. Skills are pulled that we expect a Family Caregiver can practice safely. Completion of the course does not contribute to completing a HCA program in Alberta.
