Badge holders will be trained in the Science of Reading (SoR), which is an Oklahoma State requirement for all teacher candidates, as well as current teachers in the field. (HB 362; Strong Readers Act). With this knowledge, badge holders will be able to utilize science based literacy instruction in their own classrooms.

Earning Criteria

Earn a B or greater for the course READ 4023 - Reading & Language Development of the Young Child.

Student Learning Outcome #1 - Demonstrate knowledge of the major components of reading (phonemic awareness, word recognition, phonics, vocabulary and background knowledge, fluency, comprehension strategies, and motivation) and how they are integrated into fluent reading.

Student Learning Outcome #2 - Demonstrate knowledge of language development and reading acquisition and the variations related to cultural and linguistic diversity.

Student Learning Outcome #3 - Demonstrate knowledge of reading research and linguistic foundations of reading and writing processes and instruction.

Student Learning Outcome #5 - Use instructional grouping options (individual, small-group, whole-class, and computer-based) as appropriate for accomplishing given purposes.

Student Learning Outcome #6 - Understand how the reading curriculum is related to local, state, and professional standards, and how to select and implement multiple assessment strategies to assess and monitor literacy development within the instructional setting.
