Science of Reading (SoR)

Badge holders will be trained in the Science of Reading (SoR), which is an Oklahoma State requirement for all teacher candidates, as well as current teachers in the field. (HB 362; Strong Readers Act). With this knowledge, badge holders will be able to utilize science based literacy instruction in their own classrooms.

Earning Criteria

READ 5460 Science of Reading: Foundations of Literacy. Must complete the course with a grade of 'B' or better.

Explain the importance of scientifically based reading research by: a). Identify different types of research methods/designs and b). Access, read, and evaluate research articles.

Summarize the Simple View of Reading & Reading Rope models and how they are used to understand reading development, instructional needs, and reading concerns.

Identify the five essential components (phonological awareness, decoding, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension) of reading instruction and select evidence-based instructional strategies involved with teaching each area of reading.
