This badge focuses on helping engineers and scientists avoid common errors of grammar, punctuation, and usage in scientific writing. Issues covered are as follows: recognizing whether a group of words is a grammatical sentence, as opposed to a run-on or fragment; using commas to avoid ambiguity; and topics common in engineering and science. Examples include selecting verb tense for reports, expressing numbers, and properly using a colon to introduce an equation or list.

Earning Criteria

Take the online diagnostics (or in-class quizzes) for avoiding common errors of grammar, punctuation, or usage. These diagnostics (or quizzes) contain more than 30 questions.

Refer to the badge’s short films and exercises to address the errors missed in the diagnostics (or in-class quizzes). If necessary, retake the diagnostics (or in-class quizzes) to earn a passing grade of 70 percent.

Show mastery of the material by scoring at least 90 percent on a final comprehensive quiz. If necessary, retake quiz to score a 90 percent grade.
