Principles of Assertion-Evidence Presentation
Issued by
Penn State College of Engineering
Many talks in engineering and science suffer from having too much noise. Much of the problem arises from presenters following PowerPoint’s defaults and building their talks on phrase headlines supported by bulleted lists. A much more effective way is the assertion-evidence approach, which calls on speakers to build their talks on messages supported by visual evidence. This badge calls on learners to understand principles of assertion-evidence presentations in engineering and science.

View 60 minutes of preparation films. These films address the biggest problems that occur in presentations about engineering and science. Problems include not properly organizing a technical talk, not knowing when and when not to use slides, and following the weak defaults of PowerPoint. The films also discuss both the three principles of the assertion-evidence approach and how to deliver an assertion-evidence presentation.
