40 - Hour Mediation Training

This mediation training awards a micro-credential to learners who complete the 40 hours of instruction in basic mediation skills. Learners must participate productively in exercises, simulations, and debrief discussions where they will develop knowledge of the underlying principles of negotiation and mediation and develop and reflect on the skills acquired.

Actively participate in the 40 hours of mediation and conflict resolution training under the guidance of the trainers.

Draft mediator opening: Learners will draft an opening remarks that they will deliver as the mediator at the start of the mediation to orient disputants to the process. The remarks should address: welcome, introductions, logistics, roles of mediator/parties/lawyers, confidentiality/voluntariness/self determination, process flow, joint and caucus sessions, agreement/non-agreement.

Applying Model Standards: Learners will receive a scenario containing an ethical dilemma. Using the Model Standards of Conduct for Mediators they will identify the ethical dilemma and apply to relevant Model Standard(s) to make a recommendation as to how the dilemma should be addressed.

Anticipation and Reflection: 1) Identify the skills learners bring to mediation and skills they wish to develop. 2) Closing Reflection On: One simulation where they were the mediator. Learners address how they applied skills & techniques including: summarizing, questioning, reframing, distinguishing positions & interests, facilitating interest-based negotiation; surprising aspects; what they would do differently; and three most important takeaways.
