This micro-credential introduces the essentials of instructional design, a systematic approach that can guide the development of engaging and effective learning resources on health-related topics. Learners investigate the theory and practice of conducting a needs analysis, utilization of technology-based tools and strategies, and the development, implementation, and evaluation of an instructional plan.

Earning Criteria

Complete IDN525, a 3-credit graduate level course which introduces key concepts of instructional design approaches and models. Course requirements include readings, discussions, and a final project which entails applying core principles of a needs assessment to a real-world instructional problem.

Complete one of the following courses: IDN526, IDN529, IDN532, or IDN537: Each of these 3-credit, graduate level courses delves further into educational theory, design, and/or specific tools or strategies; students will select a course based on their own interests. Each course has a range of requirements including readings, discussions, and ongoing projects. The project completed for the selected course will complement the final project which the student has chosen for IDN525.

Attend a webinar and complete an analytic paper: Coursework is complemented by a webinar during which professionals from the health field discuss the importance of instructional resources in their disciplines, including how they approach problems and opportunities related to current educational issues in health professions. Micro-credential candidates submit an analytic paper connecting their proposal to issues raised in the webinar, demonstrating their ability to apply theory to practice.
