School of Nursing Community Engagement Distinction

This micro-credential integrates community engagement into the nursing education curricula for matriculated undergraduate and graduate nursing students. The program fosters experiential learning in some of the most vulnerable communities, allowing student active participation to examine connections between socioeconomic and racial disparities with health outcomes. Nursing Alumni will also benefit from this opportunity to expand their knowledge and experience in community nursing practice.

Complete the Connecticut Center for Nursing Workforce Population Health course. This four-module, online self-paced course is to serve as a primer for nurses, nursing students and other healthcare providers to expand their knowledge of Population Health and transform their approach as to how patients and clients are cared for within the community. Attend an hour-long educational offering and hands-on training on Stop the Bleed Hemorrhage Control; Narcan Administration and Epi Pen Administration provided by an approved/certified instructor (approved by School of Nursing Director of Community Engagement). The student must provide a copy of the “completion of training” certificates to QU prior to attending a community event.

Complete the Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative (CITI) on-line required competency for all faculty & students involved in research (4 hours). CITI: platform hosting the online training modules for Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR). RCR means following applicable laws, rules, and guidelines to ensure research is conducted honestly, accurately, and ethically. The CITI RCR Basic Course is offered through QU Center for Research & Scholarship.

Complete a total of four pre-approved community events and reflect on the events with journal entries on the interdisciplinary teams encountered during the events, goals, and lessons learned. Total learner engagement in activities totals 70 hours.
