Undergraduate Nursing Research Distinction

This micro-credential is awarded to students who demonstrate ethical standards for the protection of human subjects in research while applying selected elements of the research process with the guidance of an experienced research faculty mentor or engage in improvement science. Students collaborate with nurses or other health care professionals in the process of disseminating (a) research evidence or (b) the application of scientific evidence as a poster/podium presentation, or publication.

Earning Criteria

Learners complete the Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative (CITI) online required competency for all faculty & students involved in research (4 hours). CITI: platform hosting the online training modules for Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR) including applicable laws, rules, and guidelines to ensure research is conducted honestly, accurately, and ethically.

Learners attend (in person/virtually) 26 hours of pre-approved scholarly activities related to the dissemination or application of nursing research.

Learners participate in 40 hours of guided experiential learning activities related to nursing research and evidence-based practice such as conducting research with faculty mentor guidance (ex. QU summer research), collaborating on faculty's research/improvement science initiative (data collection, analysis, data displays, study appraisal, EB/QI team), etc.

Learners present the study/scholarship experience involvement in writing an evidence-based practice (EBP) standard; involvement in an EBP improvement initiative), guided by faculty mentor. Presentation may be a poster or podium presentation at a conference, webinar, or other key event.

This micro-credential is not associated with academic credit.

Assessment of completion of micro-credential requirements is completed by a committee of faculty experts evaluating learners artifacts aligned with a rubric.
Standards
CITI RCR training is described above. The CITI RCR training is valid for five years. Therefore, after graduation, the student may want this documentation available.
The SON is accredited by the AACN. The Essentials outline the necessary curriculum content and expected competencies of graduates. Essential III: Scholarship for Evidence Based Practice - professional nursing practice is grounded in the translation of current evidence into one’s practice.
The SON undergraduate program is Holistic Endorsed by the AHNCC. The current standards of practice of holistic nursing are based on five holistic core values. The first and fifth core values address are holistic ethics, theory, and research.
