Earning Criteria

Developed fundamental knowledge and understanding of animal welfare requirements, low stress livestock handling techniques, mustering and marking.

Maintenance of basic electric and conventional farm fencing and safe work practices.

An introduction to animal nutrition, feeding out, supplementary feeding of livestock and water monitoring.

Introduction to tractor and front end loader operations, including pre and post operational checks and basic operator maintenance (available to students aged 16 and above).

Introduction to pastures, plant pest, disease and disorder identification and common weed species. Under supervision be able to handle and apply chemicals.

If completed as an elective, develop milking skills (cattle) using appropriate equipment and understanding hygiene requirements.

Understand and follow workplace directives in oral and/or written form, identify appropriate methods of communication for the workplace with your supervisor and peers, and gain skills and knowledge when completing workplace documentation and to participate productively in meetings and discussions.

If completed as an elective, safely operate and maintain a quad bike (ATV), including loading and unloading on a trailer, safely operate in diverse types of terrain and understand relevant road rules and legislation (available to students aged 16 and above).

If completed as an elective, safely operate and maintain side-by-side utility vehicles, loading and unloading on a trailer, safely operate in diverse types of terrain and understand relevant road rules and legislation (available to students aged 16 and above).

If completed as an elective, understand the fundamentals of working in an operational shearing shed, with a focus on setting up and maintaining the shearing board and safely using the wool press.

If completed as an elective, develop handpiece usage and crutching skills and the ability to grind combs and cutters.
