A Taste of the Trades

Sponsored by Suffolk County Department of Labor, this immersion program introduces the foundations of renewable energy, infrastructure, and careers in trade labor and engineering. Students in this program reside in school districts within proximity to power grid, offshore wind, and infrastructure projects and have an interest in discovering educational and career pathways through industry-led experiential learning opportunities and hands-on projects.

Earning Criteria

High School students earning this digital badge participated in Suffolk County's Summer Youth Employment Program, "A Taste of the Trades." For 6 hours a day, 4 days a week, for 7 weeks, students learned about renewable energy, advanced manufacturing, and infrastructure at Brookhaven National Laboratory, Stony Brook University, and Suffolk County Community College. Topics and projects included geothermal, offshore wind turbines, electric vehicles, soldering, welding, and CNC machining.
