Certified Phlebotomy Technician

This course prepares students to enter the healthcare industry as a certified phlebotomist and participate in a nationally recognized phlebotomy certification exam. Students learn the processes, procedures and techniques for collecting blood specimens and complete 45 clinical externship hours acquiring direct patient-care experience. Students also learn related terminology, anatomy and physiology, laboratory safety, order of draw, and other established regulations and standards.

Identify the function of phlebotomy in the healthcare setting which includes hospitals, clinics, and physician offices.

Demonstrate competency in Bloodborne Pathogens, OSHA Regulations, Infection Control, Laboratory Safety and HIPAA Compliance.

Practice venipuncture and capillary puncture techniques by selecting appropriate veins and demonstrating proper collection techniques by venipuncture on adults.

Recognize the need for specialized collection techniques, the complications and special considerations associated with blood collection and micro-collection.

Identify quality assurance practices and liability risk management as they apply to healthcare.

Apply the skills required to project an image of professionalism to include appearance, conduct, punctuality, competency and continuing education.

Successfully complete nationally recognized phlebotomy technician certification exams.
