The “Basic GPS Training” introduces the global positioning system (GPS). Positioning systems allow for identifying and recording (electronically) the location of an object or person. These systems are critical to many fields, including natural resource management, environmental planning, and precision farming. The Global Positioning System (GPS) is a satellite-based navigation system created and operated by the US Department of Defense (DoD).

Earning Criteria

At a minimum, each participant is expected to have a working knowledge of a Windows-based computer. The training will focus on introducing the participants to the basic principles of GPS, emphasizing field applications.

Students will learn how to conduct field surveys using handheld and real-time differential GPS units and incorporate those within GIS data viewers. Several GPS exercises will be completed using a variety of handheld GPS units. Upon completing each exercise, the instructor will outline the basic concepts covered.

Additionally, each participant must address a list of questions that emphasize the main concepts covered in the exercise. The responses to the questions will be reviewed with the group to highlight important topics and discuss areas of concern.
