The “Basic QGIS Desktop Training” introduces the participants to the field of geographic information systems. It provides hands-on training on widely used open-source GIS desktop software through step-by-step exercises. It covers the basic concepts of working with vector data, including querying and symbolizing, labeling and classifying, creating maps, map projections and inventory operations, and creating vector data.

Earning Criteria

At a minimum, each participant is expected to have a working knowledge of a Windows-based computer. The training will focus on introducing the participants to the field of geographic information systems through presentations and six QGIS tutorials.

Upon completing each tutorial, the instructor will review the completed work with each participant and provide helpful hints and positive feedback. Additionally, each participant must address a list of questions that emphasize the main concepts covered in the tutorial. The responses to the questions will be reviewed with the group to highlight important topics and discuss areas of concern.
