Rodent Behavior Skills
Issued by
University of New England
Earners will learn the skills needed to perform basic rodent behavior techniques, making them a valuable asset in any pre-clinical research laboratory. Learned skills include: proper handling and care; restraint and systemic injections; maintaining an anesthetic level; blood collection and humane euthanasia. Once learned, the skills will be used in a student run experiment where we will cover, data input, basic graphing, statistical analysis and how to compile a final report.

Earning Criteria
-
Students will be taught and required to demonstrate proper rodent behavior techniques. Once learned, they will conduct their own research experiment at the University of New England. Technique include: healthy observations & basic handling; restraint & systemic injections, maintaining an anesthetic level, blood collection and humane euthanasia.
-
The student will then set-up a basic study to assess locomotion in a rodent. Two different treatments will be administered and the amount of movement will be quantified. A 2-tailed t-test will be performed to determine if there is a significant difference between the treatment groups.
-
The skills learned and experimental results will be logically placed together into a power point presentation. This will serve as the final report and a way to express the data.
-
The badge will take 1 semester to complete. We will meet as a group (12 students per semester max will be accepted) on Wednesday afternoons from 1- 4 pm.
-
Pre-requisites: Student must complete CITI rodent laboratory trainings as well as required UNE Brightspace laboratory safety trainings.
