Earners are UAlbany research master’s and doctoral students who have demonstrated the development of research communication skills and showcased these skills through participating in the UAlbany 3MT Competition.

Earning Criteria

Session 1 (1-hour) - Communicating to a Non-Specialist Audience - This session covers 1) how to find a hook to get audiences interested in their research, 2) how to frame your research and focus on the most compelling aspects of the work, and 3) make a strong case for your work's importance to non-specialist audiences.

Session 2 (1-hour) - Pitch + Presence - This session covers 1) how to visually communicate, 2) how to capitalize on your reputation and sound credible when presenting, 3) how to feel more comfortable speaking in front of groups, and and how to 4) communicate with impact

Session 3 (1-hour) - Data Visualization – This session covers 1) how to effectively design and use a PowerPoint slide to support an oral presentation 2) how to let your slide speak for itself or direct the audience to your slide, and 3) common pitfall to avoid when utilizing a PowerPoint slide.

Session 4 (1-hour) - Presentation Zen - This session brings the first three modules together to 1) help the learner to limit text on their slide, 2) make their presentation visual and 3) tell their story in three minutes.
