Earners will have attained competency in intermediate-level communication skills for American Sign Language. Successful learners will develop expressive and receptive language skills, using fundamental ASL vocabulary and grammatical structures. The earner has actively engaged with individuals who are Deaf and can recognize, respect, and adhere to Deaf cultural norms. Earners will have completed ASL III. This badge is not a credential for providing ASL interpreting services.

Earning Criteria

Earners participate in spontaneous conversation illustrating their competency in using expressive skills in American Sign Language (ASL).

Earners will demonstrate a knowledge of current appropriate behavioral norms to interact with Deaf people in America. Earners will gain knowledge of the historical oppression and current cultural bias towards the Deaf community.

Receptive skills: At the completion of ASL III, earners complete a written test of understanding and applying up to 1500 possible lexical signs and the 8 ASL classifier categories at 80% accuracy.

Expressive skills: At the completion of ASL III, earners perform a spontaneous conversation understanding and applying up to 1500 possible lexical signs accurately, including accurate production of the 8 classifier categories and use of space in ASL.

Earners create a videotaped project demonstrating accurate ASL production including lexicon, classifiers, and use of space at an intermediate level.

Earners perform a storytelling project to an audience demonstrating accurate ASL techniques including role shift, tense identification, narrative structure, transitions, classifiers, and use of space.

Earners will have successfully completed ASLG F101X American Sign Language I, ASLG F202X American Sign Language II, and ASLG F203 American Sign Language III
