Leadership Fundamentals for Organizational Change

This course equips students with the skills to critically analyze and propose organizational change processes and leadership skills for change. Students will explore leadership strategies for implementing change, assess the success and challenges of these efforts, and identify contributing factors. Additionally, they will practice designing comprehensive proposals for sustainable organizational change, assuming leadership roles in hypothetical scenarios to apply their knowledge practically.

Earning Criteria

Learners select a current or recent change in the organization of the choice to create a "Change Story Project" assignment. Through the assignment they uncover the context for the change (e.g., examining the organizational history, background, and context), interview change agents, and assess the outcomes of the change initiative efforts, while making connections to theories, approaches and best practices learned.

The learner presents their Change Story Project and leads discussion about the steps leaders took, the various change models observed from the leader's actions, and any other insights discovered during the learner's research and analysis. Nine change processes: Purpose - the Why; Type of Change: reform/transform; System Approach; Taking Stock; Setting Approach; Communication and Agents of Change, Culture for Change, Urgency, Momentum and Celebrating Gains, and Sustainability & Capacity Building.

Students assume the hypothetical role of the leader of the organization and develop a new plan for implementing changes to the organization. Changes may be a new initiative or those that were analyzed. The student creates a proposal articulating what changes are proposed, why, and how they will be accomplished. The plan includes 8 change processes, and highlights which change models, approaches or strategies they recommend for implementation. Identify players and timeline. Provide a rationale.
