Technical Communication Foundations

Participants learn the essentials of technical communication (TC) including the principles of technical writing, technical editing, document design, collaboration, and user-centered design and build a portfolio of projects that includes common technical communication genres such as technical descriptions, instructions, proposals, infographics, and various types of scientific and technical reports. Prepares you to begin deeper study and practice in the various fields of technical communication.

Earning Criteria

Successful completion of TCID 2090: TECHNICAL WRITING AND PRESENTATION - Prepares students to write effectively and ethically within technical, scientific, and engineering contexts. Students organize, design, compose, and revise clear documents and visuals both as individuals and as part of writing teams while learning to tailor their writing to an audience’s needs.
Successful completion of TCID 3120: TECHNICAL EDITING AND STYLE – Focuses on editing strategies for improving the style and clarity of technical documents. Students practice the principles of editing at various levels including developmental, comprehensive, and copy editing while building understanding of editing’s role in the document development process.
Successful completion of TCID 3130: CONTENT STRATEGY AND MANAGEMENT - Examines the history, theory, and practice of creating and delivering technical content for the Internet and mobile devices. Students develop a content strategy for a client and produce online communication materials using a database-enabled content management system for editing and publishing.
