Badge earners will demonstrate independent living skills, as indicated in their individualized person-centered planning process. Skills may include, self-determination, self-advocacy, health and wellness management, management of daily tasks, community mobility, community safety, and/or civic engagement. Earners have developed and applied their skills to demonstrate an increased level of independent living, as measured by achievement of measurable goals set at enrollment.

Earning Criteria

Completed and attended at least 80% of academic coursework as related to independent living goals for at least 2 semesters. This may include HHS 400 B: Academic Success & Well-Being, in addition to other courses.

Attend documented experiences that support independent living goals (e.g., events related to nutrition, personal finance, time management, self-advocacy, physical fitness, and/or civic engagement); demonstrate self-determination by self-monitoring progress towards independent living goals and adjusting plans if goals are not met; demonstrate self-advocacy skills by identifying and requesting needed supports for goal achievement from appropriate entities (e.g., campus offices, staff, etc.).

Earners must develop and complete a Person-Centered Plan that includes at least 3 independent living goals. Independent living goals may incorporate multiple life skills or activities of daily living, but cannot be centered on individual basic life skills/activities of daily living. Earners must demonstrate progress towards at least 2/3 independent living goals, as measured by standards/benchmarks set in their Person-Centered Plan.
