Introduction to Serious Mental Illness

Earners have an understanding of what constitutes serious mental illness (SMI), including the diagnostic criteria, prevalence, and the impact on individuals and communities. They have skills in crisis intervention for individuals with SMI, including strategies for de-escalation, medication non-compliance, and co-occurring disorders. Earners are competent in applying an anti-racist lens and can challenge social injustice within the context of mental health care.

Earning Criteria

Complete 5 training webinars: 1) Introduction to Serious Mental Illness, 2) Racial Trauma and Serious Mental Illness, and 3) Suicidal Ideation and Behavior across the Psychosis Spectrum are required; and complete at least 2 of the following webinars: 1) Substance Use and Serious Mental Illness, 2) Crisis Work and Serious Mental Illness, 3) Serious Mental Illness and Children/Adolescents, and 4) Serious Mental Illness and the Virginia Legal System.
