In accordance with the competencies put forth by the National Board of Health and Wellness Coaches (NBHWC), the 21st Century Skill of Empathy includes the capacity to communicate with clients and patients in ways that can enhance self-motivation and self-awareness . Earners of this badge exhibit four sub-competencies: listening actively, providing validation, identifying others’ needs and values, and incorporating diverse perspectives.

Earning Criteria

Attend and participate in the "Health Coaching" course. This course discusses the basics of health coaching, using effective communication skills to help clients and patients enhance health outcomes, and referring clients and patients to appropriate resources to support their behavior changes. Students receive an Introduction to Health Coaching.
